The legendary Barry Manilow. You could just say Manilow and no explanation would have to follow. For those of you of a certain generation or anyone who just loves good music, you get the hype. It might not be cool to admit you love this brand of music but I will scream it from the rooftops!!
Barry Manilow has been a staple in music for decades and continues to pack arenas at age 80. I spoke to one fan who said she had seen him 74 times. Seriously. The nostalgia he brings to the experience can be felt through goosebumps and tears. I dare you to listen to Mandy without crying. In fact, I double dare you.
The joy can be measured in dancing and singing, and the appreciation can be seen in the standing ovations that never seem to end. Like when the giant screen introduces us to his performance of "Mandy" on "The Midnight Special" in the 70s and then he comes out to pick up the next verse live. Moments like this one resonate with the fans and they can't stop clapping.
Seeing this artist for the first time in my life, was a true miracle because I couldn't imagine it would be something I would ever get to experience. I grew up with his music but never had the opportunity to see him perform live. So when I heard that he would be coming to town, I jumped at the chance. There was no way I would miss this one.
He belted out hits and sashayed across the stage like a man half his age. His piano playing is still pure perfection. His vocals are not as strong as they once were but the audience was happy to sing along and we never missed a note.
I have often wondered if an artist should keep touring into their golden years or just hang up the mic. But here's the reason to keep going. If only one fan gets to mark that show off their entertainment bucket list, it was worth it. And for me, this was that show.
